Endowment

An endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School, forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff.

Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by: diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and by helping to fund programs that would otherwise be unaffordable such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.

CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, and beautification and green initiatives.

  • How does a family donate to the endowment?

    Families can choose to contribute any amount to an existing CDS Scholarship or Bursary endowment in order to support a wide range of areas. CDS’ endowment currently has 15 named Endowed Funds that support a wide range of areas including athletics, music, scholarship and bursaries, staff development and training and the environment.

  • How does a family create a named endowment fund?

    In order to create a named endowment fund in support of a specific area or initiative within the School or a scholarship/ bursary, a minimum of $25,000 donation or pledge is requested. This can be contributed to over a number of years.   • What is an endowment and why is it important?

    An endowment is a fund of funds that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. In many cases, endowments are created to fund specific areas for support within a school. Often, donor gifts create named funds that recognize an individual and support an area of personal interest. Endowments are important for institutions because they provide a source of income to sustain scholarships, projects and initiatives into the future. The Country Day School's total endowment is approximately $6 million.

  • CDS Association Bursary Endowment Fund

    The Association Bursary supports the School’s general bursary program which provides financial assistance to returning students.

  • Edmond G. Eberts Endowment Fund

    The Eberts Fund was established in honour of one of our Founders in support of The Country Day School’s scholarship program.

  • Jim Bayler Endowment Fund

    The Jim Bayler Fund in support of the general bursary program was established in honour of Mr. Bayler upon his retirement as the Director of the Junior School in 2007.

  • Paul C. Duckett Endowment Fund

    The Paul C. Duckett Fund was established in honour of Mr. Duckett upon his retirement after a distinguished 22 year career as Head of School from 1989 to 2011. This fund supports existing families who encounter financial need.

  • SavMar Endowment Fund

    The SavMar Endowment Fund was established by an anonymous donor family to provide bursary (financial support) for our community.

  • Taylor Endowment Fund

    The Taylor Fund is named in honour of Peter Taylor who was a founding teacher of The Country Day School and former Director of the Junior School. The Peter Taylor Endowment Fund in support of the general bursaries program was established in his memory after he passed away in 2006.

  • The Courtney T. Cathers Endowment Fund

    Established to honour the memory of a member of the Class of 2006, this fund provides interest for the The Courtney T. Cathers Celebration of the Arts Award. It is to be presented to a Grade 11 student returning to CDS for their graduating year. Not an annual award, this recognition is granted only on the special occasion when a student has demonstrated an artistic evolution and personal character over the course of their Senior School career that reflects vision, dedication, craft and an embodiment of the joy of living.

  • The Dinny Day Endowment Fund

    Established to provide annual interest to support the Dinny Day Awards. The Dinny Day Award is presented to the top academic students entering into Grade 5, 6, and 7. The award is presented to one male and one female student in each designated grade. The awards are confirmed by the Director of Junior School.

  • The Dorothy and Margaret Millar Endowment Fund

    The Millar Endowment Fund was established to provide interest for the Dorothy and Margaret Millar Award. The award is presented to the student entering Grade 10 who has displayed a continuing interest in and enthusiasm for the Social Sciences.

  • The Robert M. Ross Endowment Fund

    Established to honour the School's second Headmaster, Robert Ross, the Fund provides interest to support the Robert M. Ross Award. The award is presented to a current Grade 11 Student, returning for graduating year, who has best exemplified leadership, hard work, commitment and school spirit through her or his involvement in all aspects of school life.

  • The Chant Family Endowment Fund

    Established in 1998 to provide support for resource and monitoring programs that support student development in the transitional years (Grades 6-9). Funds are directed to professional development, training, guidance, and the purchase of learning materials that support resource and monitoring programs.

  • The Di Hawksworth Endowment Fund

    Established by the CDS Association in honour of Di Hawksworth, a staff member for 28 years from 1972-2000, the Hawksworth Endowment Fund provides annual interest to support The Country Day School’s athletic program.

  • The Milligan Music for Life Endowment Fund

    The Music for Life Endowment Fund was established in 2001 to provide interest to support the Music Program at The Country Day School. The Music for Life Endowment intent is to provide the opportunity to have the ability to bring in composers, conductors and musicians to the School to perform for or rehearse with CDS students.

  • The Wilma West Endowment Fund

    Established by the CDS Association in honour of Wilma West, a CDS staff member for 27 years from 1974-2001, The Wilma West Endowment Fund provides annual interest to support the environmental beautification of the School grounds, including green initiatives that will confer benefits to the School as a whole.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
