The Drama and Theatre Arts program at The Country Day School is skills based, focusing on the practical tools needed for physical and vocal self-expression. The program's mantra, emblazoned on the drama uniforms, is Dedication. Vision. Craft. The Drama Department believes that this embodies its philosophy that theatre is a combination of determination, imagination and technique that demands a unique combination of play and rigour. Our state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre enhances our ability to inspire and instruct our students. At CDS, the Arts are considered to be as much a part of a child's development and success as reading, writing, and arithmetic.

While the program prepares students thoroughly for the study of theatre at the post-secondary level, we recognize that most students will not choose to do so. The emphasis is therefore on the acquisition of personal qualities that will benefit students whatever their chosen path, including self-awareness, confidence, lateral and critical thinking, empathy, clear and persuasive communication, the management of complex tasks, working within a group and analytical skills.

The School's drama productions are extremely inventive and of the highest quality in all respects. Students take leadership, not only in performance, but in technical, design and managerial aspects of the productions.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
