Why Athletics Are Important

At The Country Day School, we have a balanced approach to athletics. While sports participation is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged with 48 teams across 24 sports to choose from. Junior and Middle School students often try their hand at several different sports before discovering one or two to pursue in Senior School.

Athletics are considered an integral part of the School's program of education. While we advocate fitness for life, other long-lasting values are established through team sports; chief among them: self-confidence, discipline, grit, sportsmanship and integrity. Our athletic philosophy and curriculum provide experiences that will help students emotionally, mentally, socially and physically.

Our program develops in every athlete the necessary skills to be successful - not only in sports, but also in life.

"CDS athletes play with pride, sportsmanship, a positive attitude and respect for the game, our opponents and officials," says CDS Director of Athletics, Geneva Winterink. "Win or lose, our athletes approach each term of sport for the love of the game and camaraderie with their teammates.”

  • U14 Boys' Soccer Team Off to a Strong Start

A week ago Monday, the U14 Boys’ Soccer team hosted The York School in an exciting matchup. The game started evenly, with both teams creating opportunities, but it was CDS who struck first. High Performing Athletics

The Country Day School prides itself in teaching its athletes top-level technical skills, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and integrity. With an offering of 48 teams across 24 sports, many CDS students also compete at a more elite-level outside of school. Supporting these athletes as they strive to excel in all areas of their lives is an important part of what CDS does.

Throughout the School’s history, there has been a willingness to customize class schedules specific to the needs of student-athletes to allow them time to compete competitively at a provincial or national level, while still prioritizing their academics. Some of the higher profile graduates to benefit from these accommodations include Elvis Stojko ’91, two-time Canadian Olympic Silver Medalist (1994 and 1998) and three-time World Champion; Michael Cammalleri ’99, former professional ice hockey player who played 15 seasons in the NHL, retiring as a left winger for the Edmonton Oilers; Adriana Leon ’10, Olympic Gold medalist (Tokyo 2021), member of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team and player for West Ham United; Barclay Goodrow '11, two-time consecutive Stanley Cup champion with Tampa Bay and right winger for the New York Rangers; and Victor Mete '16, defenseman for the Ottawa Senators and member of Team Canada's 2018 Gold medal winning World Junior Hockey Team.

CDS's High Performance Phys-Ed Program (HPPP) offers scheduling accommodations for provincially or nationally ranked athletes in Grades 10-11 to help balance their busy training schedules. In order to be part of this program, these competitive athletes must be at least provincially ranked and training a minimum of 12 hours or more outside of school each week

This year there are five students enrolled in the program. All interested candidates must complete an application form available through Coach Steadman or Mrs. Huckvale in the Student Services Centre. For more information, please contact Denise Steadman in the Physical and Health Education Department or Peter Milonas, Head of Physical and Health Education.

To learn about some of our recent HPPP student athletes, please read some of the stories below.

  • CDS Sr. Boys Volleyball – A Team to Remember

Sixteen years is a long time, especially long if you are a fan of our Sr. Boys Volleyball team who just won CISAA DIV 2 Gold for the first time since 2009. The championship was worth the wait as Coach Collins' team delivered more than a perfect record; they also delivered effort, attitude and ‘teamness’.

At the beginning of the season, Coach Collins could tell this team was different, not only in its talent level but in its character. “Talent can only take you so far,” he says. “The ultimate team is created upon character. From winning no games in Grade 9, they were resilient in their learning, patience and dedication to winning. In their final year, these true students of the game voluntarily watched game tape of rivals before our final tournament.”

Earlier this week, Kiran and Jovin Chaudhry '26 competed in the OFSAA championships for Open Mixed Doubles at the Sobeys Stadium on York University’s campus.  Kiran has qualified for OFSAA in the past, having competed in her inaugural CISAA and OFSAA championships in Grade 9 in singles before a season-ending leg injury slowed her down. Last spring in Grade 11, she won CISAA Gold in singles.

Meanwhile, her brother Jovin helped his U16 team qualify for CISAA in Grade 9, where they won a CISAA Bronze medal and experienced the best finish ever in CDS’s U16 boys tennis history. In his Grade 10 year, the U16 boys team qualified again and placed 6th overall. Both Kiran and Jovin played singles for CDS throughout their high school career, as well as outside of school.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
