Grade 5 Human Biology

Mrs. Johnson
As part of the Human Body Systems science unit, the Grade 5 classes spent an Outdoor Education class participating in an experiential activity that showcased the digestive system. Each class was divided into smaller groups of 3 or 4. A diagram of the system was reviewed and then students were given materials to simulate how the digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients and processes food. Matteo said, “It helped me learn the parts of the digestive system in more detail.”   Photo Gallery
First, the students mashed a banana and some crackers, then added water and vinegar (saliva and stomach acid). Aniya and Anna stated, “The mixture was wet, mushy and lumpy!” And Will found the mixture to be “jiggly and slimy.”

The mixture then travelled down the esophagus (plastic bag) and into the intestines (panty hose) where important nutrients were “absorbed” into the body. The students were mostly delighted and a little bit squeamish while participating in this fun activity led by Mr. Johnson. It is clear that our mission to understand the process of digestion was accomplished!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
