Middle School VEX Robotics Team Competes in CIS League

Earlier this week, 11 intrepid Middle School Robotics students travelled to St. Clement’s School in Toronto for our first VEX robotics competition of the season. This was also our first time participating in the newly minted CIS inter-school robotics league, which sees us competing against other member schools, including St. Anne’s, St. John's Kilmarnock, St. Andrews, HTS, SCS and Crescent School.

For most of our students, it was their first ever time competing in a VEX competition, and the structure of the tournament was set up to optimize student learning. Rather than having dedicated referees and scorekeepers at each field, students were responsible for self-refereeing and keeping their own scores, which provided them with a very quick education on how the ins and outs of the scoring system works.
We brought three teams with three different robot designs, and as teams progressed through their Teamwork Challenge matches, the learning and adaptation was evident. Between matches, students could be seen frantically modifying their robot to improve the accuracy of their scoring or the durability of their drivetrain, digging for parts to fix a broken mechanism, or strategizing with their upcoming alliance match teammates from other schools. Afternoon matches were higher-scoring, overall, than those in the morning, a clear indicator that on-the-job learning was taking place.

By the end of the day, all having had multiple opportunities to drive, scorekeep, and study other team's designs, students were exhausted and proud of their accomplishments. Coaches Yu and Weening were incredibly proud of the way our students represented CDS with their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and respect.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
