Spotlight on U12 Hockey Team and Early Bird Tournament
by Mrs. Cawfield & Mr. Rafferty
While the CDS U12 Hockey Team has been around for years, this season is already shaping up to be a highlight of the Junior School experience for our players! Our team is a small but mighty group of student-athletes in Grades 4 to 6, and we know both students and their families work hard to juggle CDS practices with their busy outside hockey team schedules. Their dedication and enthusiasm is already evident on and off the ice!
Last week, we attended an Early Bird tournament at St. Andrew’s College after having only one on-ice practice together! Our team iced 12 players (11 skaters and 1 goalie) for the games. Having 11 skaters and playing three consecutive games (9 periods in a row; or the equivalent of 6 overtime periods) of fast-paced hockey can be daunting! But this did not stop this skillful and hard-working group from putting up an impressive effort in a 7-3 victory against Toronto French School and a nail-biting 5-4 loss against Selwyn House that was decided in the last minute of the game.
It is important to note that for the second consecutive year, Grade 5 student Albie Parkes (normally a forward on his Aurora Tigers team) volunteered to play as a goalie with the team. Without him, the team would have been unable to participate. His dedication and perseverance in learning the ‘ins and outs’ of goaltending have been outstanding. He has even invested in proper goalie skates this year to fully commit to his role and the team!
Coaches Mrs. Cawfield and Mr. Rafferty are very proud of their efforts in the first tournament of the season, and are excited to see what this talented squad accomplishes next! Keep it up, Cyclones!
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
