Grade 8 Students Research King History at Local Cemetery

Earlier this week, Mr. Vien and Mr. De Sanctis took their Grade 8 classes on a field trip to the former St. Andrew's Eversley Church across the street from CDS.

The class performed a cemetery study where the students were asked to collect data from the church and tombstones about former King residents who are buried there. Students analyzed and learned how to use primary sources in their historical research.
Students have done some investigative work to find out more about the individuals named and draw conclusions about trends found in relation to contemporary historical events of the mid 1800s. They were surprised to learn that Reverend Tawse of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church would pause teaching school lessons in the Eversley Schoolhouse (now the Junior School Library) to perform wedding ceremonies for couples with his students giggling in the background!

Mr. Vien also showed the students a photo of Reverend Carmichael in his carriage pulled by his well-known horse Geordie!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
