First Day of School Marks New Beginnings

Anticipation filled the hallways yesterday as students across all three schools returned to the classroom eager to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

At the first Middle/Senior School Assembly of the year, Head of School John Liggett welcomed students back and introduced our newest MS/SS faculty member Carmen Chu, returning SS Science teacher Brian Hendry, and new Senior School Director, Danny Viotto.
Student Council President Diya Mangat '25 offered an exciting plan for a spirited 2024-25 school year with an open invitation to approach her, or any of this year’s Student Council members, about anything and everything in the hopes of creating a community where everyone feels represented with a sense of belonging.

Mr. Viotto then shared a bit about himself both personally and professionally, including his memories of being a quiet student in high school, his decision to pursue education in university, and his professional academic journey that followed. His story spans from Elementary School Teacher and Principal at his alma mater to Principal of De La Salle College in Toronto, and later Superintendent of Education and Director of Education of a School Board in Sault Ste. Marie, before taking on his latest role at CDS.

Following the assembly and throughout the day, Mr. Viotto and Assistant Director of Senior School, David Drake, spent time speaking with each grade level to provide them with an overview of the year to come and a reminder of the expectations set out in our Code of Conduct in our Family and Student Handbooks. He and Mr. Drake addressed their new system for tracking uniform infractions, attendance, and digital citizenship expectations and the importance of communicating with home for support when necessary.

With an energized start and a community eager to embrace what lies ahead, CDS is off to a fantastic new school year!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
