CDS Students Join King Township for Earth Day Tree Planting

In celebration of Earth Day this week, a dedicated group of CDS students from Grades 8, 9, and 11 rolled up their sleeves and dug alongside King Township and planting partner LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests). Together they helped plant a variety of native trees and shrubs, contributing to the growth of our local tree canopy and a healthier ecosystem.
The planting took place at the Township’s new Zancor Centre, conveniently located just up Dufferin Street from CDS. Situated next to Seneca College on land that was once farmland, the Zancor Centre site is the perfect location to transform open space into a thriving natural habitat. “The sooner we can convert abandoned farmland into a more diverse ecosystem, the better,” said CDS Outdoor Education teacher Ms. Wellnhofer. Planting native trees not only enhances biodiversity but also plays a role in mitigating the effects of climate change.

The carefully selected mix of native species—including cedar, spruce, cherry, maple, and dogwood trees—are perfectly suited to the local climate. These trees and shrubs will offer a rich variety of benefits: providing food for pollinators, shelter for birds and wildlife, and year-round ecological support. With staggered blooming times and an array of fruits and seeds, they ensure a steady food source for the creatures that call this area home.

Thank you to our Grade 8, 9 and 11 students for joining Kathryn McLellan, Environmental Stewardship Outreach Coordinator for King Township and the folks from their planting partner LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) in making a lasting impact on the King community this Earth Day!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
