Exploring Imagery at the AGO

By Heather Castellan and Sarah Barbanchon

The week before March break, the Grade 10-12 visual arts classes visited the Art Gallery of Ontario to explore a range of artwork associated with their class studies. Each class experienced an art history activity and lesson with their teacher related to their current studies in class and then toured the gallery for the remainder of the day.

While at the AGO, they were able to take in two prominent exhibitions. Moments in Modernism is an installation that focuses on artistic movements from this past century: Pop Art, Abstraction, Realism and Minimalism, with artworks from Andy Warhol, Alexander Colville and Mark Rothko.

The contemporary floor featured a traveling exhibition entitled The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century. This exhibition introduced our students to how installations can be created not only by art works, but can incorporate fashion, music, videos and objects, developing a dialogue that brings awareness to activism, racial identity, gender and sexuality. The imagery ranged from photographs carefully contrived to demonstrate ideas of wealth and success to the clothing worn during the height of Hip Hop Culture.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
