Eric Zweig visits the Junior School

By Kelly Johnson, Jr. School Librarian

Last week, the Grade 5 and 6 classes were invited to a presentation by sports historian, Eric Zweig.

Eric is an author, a writer, a producer, and a researcher with many organizations including ESPN and The Hockey Hall of Fame. He is passionate about his role as an author and researcher, and we were so lucky to have him come and speak to our students. Of the 40 books he has authored, some include: The Big Book of Hockey for Kids, Hockey Trivia for Kids, and It's a Numbers Game: Football.

Eric began his presentation by reading an entry from his Grade 5 news journal where he entered sports information every morning. He often wrote about a professional sports game from the night before, or he would bring in a news clipping and comment on it. His writing career began in those early days.

Our students had many questions for Eric at the conclusion of his presentation. Eric advised, "If you want to be a writer, you have to just start writing, and you can't be afraid to show people your writing."

Before he left our school, Eric signed several of his books in our Junior School Library.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
