University of Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge

By Krista Edwards
Over the course of two days in November, 59 CDS Grade 7 and 8 students competed in the annual University of Waterloo Grade 7/8 Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) in their math classes. Seven Grade 9 students also competed in the Grade 9/10 version of the contest.

This challenging contest aims to introduce computer science concepts to students who have little or no previous experience with computing. The BCC is a paperless, on-line problem solving contest with focus on computational skills and logical thinking. Questions are inspired by real-world topics in computer science and mathematics.
This year, for the Grade 7/8 contest, there were 14,655 overall participants worldwide. And the worldwide average was 56.94 out of 90.

Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who achieved in the top 25% of students who participated at CDS. This year, students who are receiving certificates achieved 80 out of 90 or higher, and some of our certificate winners are included on the Beaver Computing Challenge Honour Roll, which is obtained for scores of 84 or higher amongst all participants worldwide.

This year, Certificates of Distinction for the Grade 7/8 BCC were earned by the following students:

  • With a score of 80: Ethan Novik, Andriana Muzychka, Aara Ko, and Arya Kapila.
  • With a score of 82: Ethan Wang, Shayla Vansh, Raina Shim, and Emily Li.
  • With a score of 84 (Honour Roll): Lucas Rites, and Mina Matsui.

  • With a score of 88 (Honour Roll): Rachel McKenzie.
  • With a perfect score of 90 (Honour Roll): Charlize Bianchi.

In the Grade 9/10 contest, there were 8,166 overall participants worldwide. The worldwide average was 61.3 out of 90.

This year, a Certificate of Distinction and inclusion on the Honour Roll for achieving a perfect score of 90 on the Grade 9/10 contest, is Renee Ng.

Congratulations to all who participated! If you would like to know your score and it was not reported in the above results, please speak to your math teacher.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
