The Academy Awards 2025: Film Class Competition Winners

By Natalie Moonan
Each year, Ms. Moonan's Grade 12 Film class takes part in a competition to predict which films and individuals will win at the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. The Academy Awards took place on Sunday, March 2nd this year, with Sean Baker's Anora receiving the Best Picture award, making history for the first time that a single individual has won in four competitive categories for a single film (Best Picture, Best Director, Editing, and Best Original Screenplay).
This year, Millie Steinmann ‘25 achieved victory by scoring 13 correct predictions. An actress herself, Millie successfully predicted the majority of the acting categories, both music awards, as well as many other categories. When asked about how she made her selections, she noted that she has kept a close eye on this year's award circuit, which includes the SAG Awards, the BAFTAs and more.

Millie’s favourite film nominated this year was A Complete Unknown. Millie stated that the film "truly immerses you in 70s folk culture and Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro's performances were transformative in the way they embodied the legendary figures of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez."

As for Film class, Millie's favourite movie to study so far has been Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, reflecting, "I was completely in awe of the cinematography, the use of colour, and the juxtaposition between a fantastical storyline and a heartbreaking escape of a young girl in the midst of war. I couldn't stop thinking about the open-ended plot after it was over!"

With Film Studies growing at The Country Day School, we now have two class sections, and therefore, had a runner-up this year. With 11 correct predictions, Brianna Dean ‘25 offered fierce competition with her predictions. Brianna was the only student in both classes to correctly guess the award winner for Best Picture. She cited social media as a great source to track movie buzz prior to the awards.

Brianna's favourite nominated films were Wicked and The Substance as "both of these films had incredible storytelling and very powerful performances from the actors." She was particularly drawn to the Costume Design award, which was won by Wicked, because "the costuming of all the characters was amazing and each character’s outfit reflected their personality and growth." Brianna's favourite film to study in film this year has been The Matrix because of its "timeless visual effects."

Bravo to Millie and Brianna, and congratulations to all who competed!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
