Grade 4 Student Places First in Global Math Contest

Last month, Grade 4 student Skye Liu received the exciting news that she had tied for 1st place in the Caribou Mathematics Competition! This worldwide online contest is held five times throughout the school year. Each of these days, six contests are offered, one for each of the grade levels 2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 and each one in English, French, Persian and Mandarin. This is the third time in recent years that CDS has had a world champion!

A number of our Grade 4 to 6 students have participated in these contests in the past, but it is very rare to finish first as the test is so challenging. In the contest for the month of February, Skye tied for first in the world with a perfect score of 12/12.
Many private and international schools take part in this competition and participating countries include China, Iran, Canada, the United States, Turkey, Russia, Dominican Republic, Uganda and Germany, to name just a few.

According to Junior School teacher Shannon Street, “What is really special about this contest is not only that students all over the world can compete with one another, but it is more unique than most math competitions in that it contains interactive questions and features mathematical puzzles rather than strictly knowledge-based questions.”

We are excited to celebrate this accomplishment with Skye who had this to say about the experience. “I like using my brain to figure out equations, including playing card games, which allows you to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Winning 1st place makes me feel really proud.”

We are proud of you too, Skye. Congratulations on this impressive accomplishment!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
