A Magical VEX Robotics Experience: Sorting, Programming, and Quidditch with Harry Potter!

Lara Gee
Last week, students from Grade 1 and Grade 5 took part in an enchanting VEX Robotics activity that combined technology, teamwork, and a little bit of magic. The event was inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter, and our young wizards and witches couldn’t have been more excited to step into the roles of their favourite Hogwarts Houses!
To begin this magical experience, we used a very special LEGO-built Sorting Hat that still had all the charm and mystery of the original. The Sorting Hat’s job? To sort our robots into the four Hogwarts Houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. With a flick of the wand (and some buttons), the Sorting Hat worked its magic, and the robots were sorted into their respective houses, ready to embark on their adventure!

Once their houses were revealed, the students got down to the exciting part: programming the robots. This was no simple task—each robot had to be programmed to navigate its way through a tricky path, winding and twisting toward its respective house. The Grade 1 students worked hand-in-hand with their Grade 5 partners, learning the basics of coding and helping their robots move through the obstacles. The teamwork between the younger and older students was nothing short of magical, as they helped each other troubleshoot and improve their programs. But the fun didn’t stop there! After reaching their houses, the robots needed to find their way to a Quidditch match!

This event was more than just a robotics activity—it was a perfect blend of fun, learning, and imagination. The students not only learned the fundamentals of coding and robotics, but they also had the chance to experience the joy of problem-solving, collaboration, and, of course, a little bit of magic. As the event wrapped up, the students left with smiles on their faces, their minds buzzing with excitement and new skills. Whether they were Gryffindors or Slytherins, all the students had a magical time in the world of VEX Robotics, and they’re already looking forward to the next adventure!

The Sorting Hat’s verdict: A resounding success!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
