  • Earth Week in the Junior School: A Week of Action and Awareness

Last week, our Junior School students embraced Earth Week with enthusiasm and purpose, setting the stage for Earth Day celebrations this week. While Outdoor Education is already a cornerstone of our curriculum, Earth Week gave us a special opportunity to deepen our connection to the natural world—and we’re fortunate to be able to do that right here on our beautiful campus.

The week featured environmental challenges, including a Lights Out challenge on Monday and House Food Waste Challenge Wednesday where students sat with their Houses in the Dining Hall and with their peers from other classes in the primary grades to track food waste as a House competition.

  • CDS Hosts CITE English Conference

    By Sarah Williams

CDS hosted the CIS Ontario’s CITE Teachers of English Conference for the second year in a row last Friday. This year’s theme was “Crossing Boundaries,” suggesting ideas about taking risks and encountering the unfamiliar—ideas about defying rules and flouting conventions.

The day began with a keynote given by award-winning author Andrew F. Sullivan whose latest book, The Marigold, was a finalist for the Aurora Awards, the Locus Awards, and the Hamilton Literary Awards, and named a Best Book of the Year by Esquire, The Verge, Book Riot and the Winnipeg Free Press. He co-wrote The Handyman Method with Nick Cutter, a novel about home improvement gone wrong. Andrew is also the author of the novel WASTE, a Globe & Mail Best Book of the Year, and the short story collection All We Want is Everything,  a Globe & Mail Best Book of the Year and finalist for the ReLit Award.

  • Eric Zweig visits the Junior School

By Kelly Johnson, Jr. School Librarian

Last week, the Grade 5 and 6 classes were invited to a presentation by sports historian, Eric Zweig.

Eric is an author, a writer, a producer, and a researcher with many organizations including ESPN and The Hockey Hall of Fame. He is passionate about his role as an author and researcher, and we were so lucky to have him come and speak to our students. Of the 40 books he has authored, some include: The Big Book of Hockey for Kids, Hockey Trivia for Kids, and It's a Numbers Game: Football.

Eric began his presentation by reading an entry from his Grade 5 news journal where he entered sports information every morning. He often wrote about a professional sports game from the night before, or he would bring in a news clipping and comment on it. His writing career began in those early days.

Our students had many questions for Eric at the conclusion of his presentation. Eric advised, "If you want to be a writer, you have to just start writing, and you can't be afraid to show people your writing."

Before he left our school, Eric signed several of his books in our Junior School Library.
  • Gr. 11 and Gr. 5 “Cross-over” Bio event

    By Kathleen Griffin

One of the benefits of a K-12 school is the chance to connect students across grade levels. This past week, our Grade 11 Biology students had the unique opportunity to step into the role of teacher/mentor as they partnered with Grade 5 students for a hands-on, cross-grade Biology activity.  Both grades are learning about human body systems, so we teamed up to bring the circulatory system to life.

Together, students explored how exercise affects the body by measuring heart rate with stethoscopes and tracking changes in blood pressure using monitors. It was a fun and engaging experience for everyone involved - our older students practiced leadership and communication skills, while our younger students got a first-hand look at science in action.

There is no better way to consolidate understanding than through real-world experiential education.

  • March Break Portugal trip deepens understanding of history, geography & culture

By Cody Black ‘27 and Josh Griffin ‘27

Over March break, 45 CDS students and faculty had the amazing opportunity to travel to Lisbon and the Azores in the beautiful country of Portugal. Our 7-day journey was filled with history, breathtaking landscapes and opportunities to build lifelong friendships. Whether it was an 8 km hike with beautiful stunning views or relaxing in the hot springs, everyone had the experience of a lifetime.

After our connection flight through the Azores, our first stop was Lisbon. Despite jet lag, we were excited to begin the day exploring a new culture. We toured the incredible Benfica Stadium in downtown Lisbon, which was a dream come true for the soccer fans among us. We even had the opportunity to be on the field and experience how massive the stadium was. Led by our humourous guide Roy, we were shown iconic Lisbon landmarks such as the streets of Alfama, Baixa, the Lisbon Cathedral, and Rossio Square, and walked around St. Jorge’s castle with its ancient artifacts and rich history. We even visited the most Western point in all of Mainland Europe, which included quite the significant wind with its incredible views!

    By Shannon Street

Before the March Break, a group of talented Grade 4 to 6 students from CDS took part in the Optimist Club Chess Tournament in Aurora—an event we’ve proudly attended for the past three years. This year, for the first time, we expanded our team to include students from Grades 7 and 8, making the competition even more exciting.

Over the years, CDS has been home to many skilled chess players, but with tournament rules allowing only four players per grade, our team was carefully selected to represent our school.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
