Beautiful Outdoor Sounds

By Kirsten Baird
If you have been around our CDS property lately, you have probably heard some jingly-jangly metal, mellow-earthy natural, or clickety-clackety-plastic sounds! This year, the Grade 3 classes began their time in Music studying the properties of sound. They then explored the musical element of Timbre, the unique sound qualities that instruments and tones can make.
The Grade 3s were challenged to design and build a sound chime based on their desired sound quality. Materials were gathered from nature, from home, and even from thrift stores as this project was focussed on being “up-cycled” from previously used materials, or those found on the ground.

With the help of Mr. Bartle, Grade 3s used some Outdoor Education time to assemble and scout out the perfect location to install their sound chimes, considering the locations with care. Students were very proud of their results, and we hope that the next time you are outside on our lovely campus, you will be soothed by their melodious outdoor sounds!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
