SS Drama Auditions For Radium Girls on Oct. 29 & 30
What would you do if the very thing you depended on to make a living, was the thing that was taking your life? What if you had to fight against a big corporation for compensation, without the means to pay lawyers or medical bills? What if you had to watch as your friends and family fell ill, only to be told that there was nothing wrong? Would you have the will to fight?
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure. Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumours could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.
Written with warmth and humour, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for a company of actors, playing friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad interested bystanders. It is both heart-wrenching and empowering, with comedic moments and highly stylized scenes. It is a play about resilience, standing up for what is right and hope. This play is sure to move not only the audience but all who are involved.
Our Senior School drama students will be performing Radium Girls on February 27, 28 and March 1. Grade 10-12 students have been emailed the audition package and those interested for either the cast or crew should sign up for an audition using the Google calendar link. Auditions are Tuesday, October 29th from 2:00pm - 4:30pm and Wednesday, October 30th from 12:35pm - 3:15pm.
It is only through sharing stories, that we learn to correct the mistakes of the past. And that the legacy of those who fought for justice is immortalized.

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
