Pop Can Tab Drive Initiative

Brianna Torrealba ‘26
The Social Justice Club in the Senior School has been actively collecting pop can tabs to support the Robert Hampson Foundation, which transforms these small tabs into big opportunities. The foundation uses the funds from recycling the tabs to provide essential mobility equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, and prosthetics to individuals who need them but may not have the financial resources to access them. These life-changing devices enable greater independence and improved quality of life for those living with mobility challenges.
During one of my volunteer shifts this summer at Mackenzie Health Hospital, I noticed their pop can tab collection initiative and spoke with a few people involved. After learning about its impact, I knew CDS had to be part of this meaningful cause. The idea was put forward at the CDS Terry Fox Day where the picnic-style lunch included soft drinks in cans. It was an easy and natural activity to add on. The Social Justice Club is now encouraging individual students to keep up the collection efforts throughout the year.

Please keep bringing in your tabs and let’s see how many we can collect! A collection container will be kept in the Senior School office. Every small contribution brings us one step closer to changing lives, and we’re excited to keep working toward this important cause. Thank you for your support!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
