CDS Wins Top Overall Canadian School In Debating Competition

Last weekend, three CDS debaters took part in the International Independent Schools’ Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) hosted by Crofton House School and Little Flower Academy in Vancouver. Our debaters all performed extremely well, each qualifying for one or more finals, and CDS won top overall Canadian school - placing 2nd overall in the entire competition!
Millie Steinmann ’25 won 1st in Drama, 2nd in impromptu and 4th speaker overall. Sarah Croxon ’24 placed 2nd for persuasive and placed 13th overall, qualifying for worlds! Ethan Wahba ’24 made finals for his persuasive speech, placing top 10 in this category, and placed 22nd speaker overall of 113 competitors.

Congratulations to all three of them and their outstanding coaches: Ms. Costanzo, Mr. Robinson and Ms. Wyndham-West!!!

Next up for Debating & Public Speaking is tomorrow’s Fulford Cup hosted here at CDS. We wish our competitors and moderators all the best and thank those who volunteered to judge or work the event. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
