Grade 4 Student Places First in Global Math Contest

Last week, Grade 4 student Ezra Leung received the exciting news that he had tied for 1st place in the Caribou Mathematics Competition! This worldwide online contest is held six times throughout the school year. Each of these days, six contests are offered, one for each of the grade levels 2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 and each one in English, French, Persian and Mandarin.
A number of our Grade 4 to 6 students have participated in these contests in the past, but it is very rare to finish first as the test is so challenging. In the contest for the month of February, Ezra tied for first in the world with a perfect score of 12/12.

Many private and international schools take part in this competition and participating countries include China, Iran, Canada, the United States, Turkey, Russia, Dominican Republic, Uganda and Germany, to name just a few. The average score on this test was 4.89 percent which reflects the high level of difficulty.

We are excited to celebrate this accomplishment with Ezra who had this to say about the experience. “I think that the math contest is a good challenge. If you are a person that is better at math then I think this contest is for you and a challenge we are lucky to get at CDS.”

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
